Light Box House / NatureHumaine

Located in the district of Rosemont-Petite-Patrie, near Père Marquette Park, the project consists of the renovation and expansion of a “shoebox”. The typical “shoebox” was erected by the working class in the 1940s and was originally a modest and economical 1-story single-family house. In a desire for heritage conservation, the district classified the “shoeboxes” into different categories of interest. In this case, it was mandatory to preserve the existing façade, but we were allowed to add a second story. To respect the original volume of the shoebox and preserve its heritage values, it was intuitive to propose a set-back second-floor addition. This pronounced recess provides an intimate green terrace on the street side, facing south.

Kamenice Villas / NEW HOW architects

October 17, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

In recent years, the village of Kamenice has experienced an influx of residents and the associated construction boom. The original village is being urbanized and urban-type architecture is emerging, especially in the center of the village. The proposed plot is located very close to the center of Kamenice village, next to the main urban axis of the village – Ringhofferova Street. The surrounding development has a diverse character – there are family houses, cottages, and apartment buildings. On the north side, the plot is adjacent to the main pedestrian route that runs through the entire village. The two villas thus create an imaginary gateway to the center of Kamenice.

Reimagining a Semi-Detached House: A Three-Step Transition – Starting this architectural project, our primary aim was to breathe fresh life into a semi-detached house. Our vision was to accomplish this transformation with minimal intervention, preserving the house’s original volumes, including the outbuilding. Initiating our design process, we placed our primary emphasis on the heart of the home —the kitchen—where updates were imperative to align it with contemporary living. The existing, outdated, and confined kitchen annex necessitated replacement.

Thingamajiggy Coffee Roaster / Yangnar Studio

Thingamajiggy is settled in Mae Rim, Chiang Mai. Surrounded by lush paddy fields and elongated hills to the west, the project manifests the owner and designer’s shared vision – to let nature play a prominent role in their architectural canvas. This coffee shop is an architectural endeavor that may never truly be completed. It thrives on the willingness to allow the environment to shape its identity rather than imposing a rigid architectural blueprint. Upon entering this space, visitors discover a unique experience of open-air seating amid two small buildings, a testament to the ‘in-between’ spaces, subject to the ever-changing seasons and climate. It defies conventional coffee shop boundaries, inviting interaction with the space in an unconventional manner.

The project is located in downtown Malakoff, in the Square Pierre Larousse district. The building blends into the heterogeneous context of the neighborhood, which includes apartment buildings, townhouses, and artists’ and craftsmen’s studios, and blends into its surroundings as a result of two all-glass facades that reflect the urban landscape. The other two facades are timber-framed and covered in aluminum cladding.

The Pool Installation at Hi-Note / Otazu García

October 14, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Located in the heart of Alphabet City, The Pool is an outdoor installation at the newly established radio bar Hi-Note. The bar’s outdoor space is backed by one of the public parks and gardens typical of this area in the city. Our design intention is to create a series of follies, or movable artifacts, scattered within the boundary of the space that would allow for different configurations and accommodate the diverse needs of the bar: a flexible space.
