The house sits in the privileged surroundings of Cala Carbó, southwest of Ibiza island. Despite not being a first-line plot, thanks to its location, within the limits of a suburban environment, and the sloped topography of the area, the house possesses magnificent views towards the sea, the sunset, and the magical islet of Es Vedrà.

This renovation aimed to create warm multifunctional spaces throughout the two floors of a characteristically brutalist duplex apartment that are fit for a young family while embracing the existing features and geometries of the floor plans. The dominant materials are industrial: exposed concrete walls and ceilings, hardwood floors, and strong metallic elements.

Located on the middle of the road from Gangchon Station to Gugok Falls and Munbae Village along the valley, the site is a quiet place a little away from Gangchon Amusement Park. Hikers and bicycle riders usually pass this place from spring, when cherry blossoms bloom until autumn. Along the way you can see old restaurants, closed accommodations, and locked down parks which have stopped development, only leaving the cutout sites a mess.

MO.CA Mobile House / IAAC

March 25, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

MO.CA is a mobile home made of zero-kilometer cross-laminated timber (DLT), and designed within the Master in Advanced Ecological Buildings & Biocities (MAEBB) program developed at the Valldaura Labs campus of the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). Throughout history, people have exercised their fundamental human right to freedom by combining self-sufficiency with mobility, from migratory tribes to interstellar explorers. In recent decades, the quest for self-sufficiency has been driven by the recognition of global climate change and the associated need for innovative, fossil-fuel-independent housing. Even more recently, the rise of remote work opportunities, facilitated by communication technologies and accelerated following the COVID-19 era, has renewed general interest in freedom of movement.

Arena Under Bridge / Atelier XÜK

The project is an outdoor exhibit for the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, located under a vehicular bridge on the west bank of the Huangpu River in Xuhui District, Shanghai. The public space along the Huangpu River has always been important in Shanghai. It is regarded as a venue for gatherings and daily activities by the residents living around. All kinds of public activities are scattered throughout the riverside from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., such as exercising and various square dancing. The lowest net height of the space under the bridge is about 2.2 meters, which is not suitable to accommodate large activities. If people could be guided over the flood control wall, they could use the old bridge built in 1986 beside the Hongwen Paper Mill- to cross the Zhangjiatang River and back to the sidewalk of the Huangpu River. Compared to crossing the river by the overpass, the new way completes the pedestrian system on the ground. In addition, public activities can be led to the riverside of Zhangjiatanggang River. As an outdoor exhibit participated in the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, both time and funding were limited. Combined with the existing space characteristics, we adopted a strategy of light intervention to guide people over the flood control wall and form a new way for public use.

The house is located in a peri-central neighborhood of the city of Córdoba, meters from the San Martín Reserve, a green lung that borders the city, an area where many families choose to live. The people are a young family from Cordoba, a mom, a dad, and two children. The area where it is located is consolidated between party walls almost entirely. From there, the need to materialize these walls appears, seeking privacy and taking the urban profile generated in the sector, achieved from a continuously exposed brick wall that contains the home and generates different interior-exterior situations.

Iconik, a nine-story apartment building designed by the architectural studio edit!, is located in the Karlín district in Prague at one of the last empty sites resulting from the millennium flood. The plot is situated on the main avenue of a district, that ranks among the most desirable Prague locations, and which has undergone a major architectural and social transformation in the last two decades – once an industrial district transformed into a hip center full of start-ups offices, restaurants and nightlife with its former Secession buildings and factories being now home to top-level gastro and independent galleries. The proposed building reflects the rich history of the formerly industrial area in its expression, and its material concept is based on both the historical plotting of the built-up area and the irregular height arrangement of the crown cornices typical for Karlín.
