The client’s vision was to create a familial haven, a space where cherished moments could unfold amidst the serene backdrop of nature’s grandeur. Upon encountering the site’s majestic contours, a profound commitment to preservation and integration emerged. Rather than imposing a foreign structure upon the land, our design ethos embraced the existing topography, maintaining the site’s natural contours to preserve its unique characteristics.

The new building of the Municipal Library, located on the edge of the Petřiny housing estate in Prague, had to deal with a diverse urban environment. The site is located on the border between a 1930s housing estate, and terraced housing from the II.WW. era, and a solitary socialistic housing estate. On the site where the ‘old nursery school’ used to stand, a building has been created that responds to and further develops the existing spatial configuration. The solitary volume, although firmly anchored to the corner, clearly defines the space and its surroundings. It relates in mass and scale to the surrounding environment.

In 2019 an EU-wide open competition procedure was carried out with 54 participants. The resulting project was completed in April 2023.

The apartment should be easy to use and beautiful, allowing for identification and offering room for development.

LIVING BRIDGES – Concept/Philosophy – Living Bridges is designed to move away from the typical dormitory or student hostel typology in urban settings, which fosters a regimented form of social control by the use of single-loaded corridor organizations. The challenge was to break away from the notion of stacked student housing where there is no exchange between students, owing to the tight site constraints forcing dead vertical development as a common imagination.
