Raúl Monterroso is one of the referents when it comes to talking about the modern movement in Guatemala. Not only has he been a promoter of the preservation of the country’s architectural legacy with his publication “The Guatemala City Guide to Modern Architecture“, but he has recently collaborated with the Museo Experimental el Eco for its Re_vista 05 with a critical analysis titled “Modern dreams, magical realism and other fantasies of yesterday and today”, which seeks to be a window for anyone to question and get involved with Guatemalan architectural values.

Architectural Classics: Mariano Moreno National Library / Clorindo Testa, Bullrich and Cazzaniga

In the central Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires, in a large lot between Austria Street, Agüero Street, and Del Libertador Avenue, stands the current building of the Mariano Moreno National Library, designed by architects Clorindo Testa, Francisco Bullrich, and Alicia Cazzaniga.

Built on the basis of the project that won first prize in a national competition in 1961, and completed in the early 1990s, it has become a landmark of modern Argentine architecture and an example of the variant of 20th century expressionism known as “brutalism“.

Mexican architect Gabriela Carrillo has built an exemplary career and is passionate about the city, territory, and diversity. Her widely awarded works, first in partnership with Mauricio Rocha and now running her own studio, have become the reference image when discussing contemporary architecture in Mexico. Her projects translate the world’s needs, developing constant work to recognize the values of the territory in order to provide spaces that dignify its inhabitants. Situated between praxis, theory, and research, her interests are focused on the everyday, leading a flexible and dynamic practice that allows her to maintain a balance between working and living.
