This adaptive reuse project in Swan Street Richmond became the new home for our multidisciplinary design studio after we outgrew our previous location in Melbourne’s CBD. We began by evaluating the constraints of our previous studio while developing a strategy focused on a flexible work culture, new technologies, and an increased commitment to sustainability.

Sotto Restaurant and Bar / Parts and Labor Design

Tucked beneath Lupetto sits Sotto, a subterranean Amaro bar that lures guests to another time yet feels delightfully of this moment. Founder Mark Barak’s mandate—’ Mad Men on holiday’—informed the meticulous design approach. Continuing Lupetto’s narrative of a little wolf maturing and exploring his freedoms, Sotto sets its scene at the stairwell, where inlaid brass wolf paw prints celebrate the “fruits of the forest” with low-lit, pink and golden-hued vignettes at every corner. The mood is unapologetically sexy.

Dorogawa Onsen is a hot spring village that leads to Mt. Omine, a sacred mountain believed to have been opened by Enno Ozunu about 1,300 years ago. Located at an elevation of approximately 820m, Omine has long flourished as a mountain climbing base for Gyoja (Yamabushi, mountain ascetics) of Shugendo, a sacred mountain worship tradition unique to Japan, and is lined with inns, guest houses, and stores selling Daranisukegan, a famous medicine from Yamato that is considered the origin of Japanese medicines.

Little Stove & Little Stump Coffee Shop and Playground / NITAPROW

Little Stove & Little Stump, a bread/coffee shop, and a playground with both indoor and outdoor areas are located next to a canal on a 4,600 sqm plot of land in the outskirts of Bangkok. The site is accessible from an alley originally known as ‘Soi Wat Yai Rom’ or Grandma Umbrella Temple Alley in Thai. The Thai word “Rom” is a homonym of the words Umbrella and Sheltered area. Both meanings became the inspiration for the compound’s design language. The coffee shop and the playground share a drop-off zone with a connecting walkway, a 38-car parking area, and a stand-alone restroom cabin.

Aru House / Curious Practice

Weatherboard cottages built in the first half of the twentieth century were often generous at the front and restricted at the rear, with their relationship to prevailing breezes, appropriate orientation, and gardens being a low priority. Aru House (Awabakal word for “insect”) plugs in a series of carefully balanced sensory amplifiers and connectors to just such a cottage in order for a long-ignored sense of place to re-emerge.
