Government institutions in India usually follow a pragmatic, understated approach when it comes to the expression of their architecture. When Goa State govt. Floated an international level competition for the design of the National Institute of Water Sports in Goa, it wanted the institute to do two things: firstly, to make a bold, iconic statement with an expression that treats the architecture beyond the functional pragmatism and secondly, takes a fresh approach to the typical Goan Architectural setting a language that’s more global yet grounded while resonating the vernacular, through the use of local materials.

Sometimes very ordinary client requests lead to surprising twists and turns and final solutions. Due to the growing number of children and limited space of the school, the school management decided to locate the new classroom in a two-story hall in the center of the school. Such a classroom would not have had adequate lighting and would have had no direct contact with the outside. In addition, the hall is a common space for all pupils. We have therefore proposed a replacement – instead of a classroom, a new library should be placed in the hall. Consequently, the new classroom would be located in the space previously occupied by the library.

Implementation of the New Educational System – The first construction section of the China Academy of Art’s (CAA) Liangzhu Campus Phase Ⅰ in Hangzhou was completed in 2022, followed by the second section completed in August 2023, resulting in a fully operational campus with 180,000 sqm of building area. At the onset of the Liangzhu Campus design competition, participating teams were required to conceive an innovative educational system aligned with socioeconomic development. This educational paradigm, proposed by Atelier FCJZ, encompasses several key facets that have been set into motion: 1. embracing hands-on pedagogy; 2. integrating architectural studies into the general education; 3. prioritizing research-led coursework at advanced levels; 4. encouraging students to organize interest clubs; 5. abolishing conventional departmental structure; 6. pioneering the concept of living and learning intertwined, which impacts campus planning directly.
