Realengo Park Market Square / Ayako Arquitetura + Helena Meirelles arquitetura + Larissa Monteiro + messina | rivas + Zebulun Arquitetura

The Market Square is part of the architectural complex of Parque Realengo, still under construction. The Park has been the subject of long-standing questioning by various social movements that debate the periphery, green areas and environmental racism. Like several construction processes in the city of Rio de Janeiro, its dynamics also involve expropriations and relocation processes. The Market Square is born from a pre-existing condition. Before its design, residents surrounding the park occupied the corner with small commercial buildings. The proposed architectural project provided for the full relocation of these buildings, however, the complex dynamics of a bidding process and execution of a public work meant that only part of the proposal was carried out.

Originally designed to cater primarily to the recreational needs of the family’s younger members and their companions, the pool area had fallen into disuse due to issues such as excessive humidity and mold formation. To breathe new life into the space, Studio Shizen embarked on a comprehensive redesign, envisioning a multifunctional environment that seamlessly integrates entertainment, relaxation, and fitness.

The industrial city, the child of railways and automobiles, has itself given rise to a new urban form: the dense suburb. Predominantly residential, it contains detached, semi-detached, and row houses, sometimes even small, collective clusters of housing along its main roadways and intersections. For the sake of comfort, major roadways avoid cutting through such dense suburbs. Its proximity to a large city allows for other forms of mobility, whether individual (soft) or collective (public). Its density entails a maximal use of public facilities and the presence of neighborhood shops.
