A discreet store that welcomes a universe of charms. With the growth in sales, the space of just one container became too small for Garimpê, a store curated with children’s products that stimulate children’s development and creativity. In addition to expanding the exhibition area, it was also necessary to accommodate the administrative sector. Located on a corner lot in Curitiba, the store’s expansion has two implementation strategies: the enrichment of customers’ relationship with the natural landscape of the land and the creation of an exhibition showcase for the city, through the expansion of the facade to the street main. From there, two new containers were connected to the pre-existing container, thus maintaining the store’s external constructive identity.

Guttfield Architecture has added a barn-like timber extension to a red brick cottage in rural West Berkshire. Bridleway House replaces a single-story garage directly alongside a public bridleway with a new two-story wing that opens up views of the countryside beyond. The site occupies a prominent location within a Thameside village and the design of the extension was carefully developed to respond to the rural and historic character of the surroundings. At the same time, the architects responded to the client’s desire to make a novel architectural contribution to the village they grew up in and to which they returned later in life.
NT46 and NT88 are self-built houses by villagers. The main brick-concrete structure of the building no longer meets safety regulations and requires overall structural reinforcement. Usually hidden or irrelevant, this seemingly inconspicuous “standard process” actually has extremely symbolic meaning in our eyes: an urban village may not be “high-end”, but its bottom line should be safety and dignity that translate into care and respect for locals. Only above this bottom line can we have the mood and necessity to continue the discussion. Nantou is evolving from temporary to permanent, marginal to normative, vague to clear, and a new urban identity and historical mission are being implanted. Therefore, we developed a consistent expression in both projects: turning structural reinforcement into visible exteriorization, leaving behind recognizable new layers that form a new logic and ethics. The design strategy of strictly inheriting the existing structural system, and reinforcing areas only where there are deficiencies through calculation, is a standard practice. However, making system-level adjustments to the structure and avoiding large-area component reinforcement is another kind of specificness. The idea of avoiding reinforcement of large-area components to preserve the original appearance of the existing building not only meets the minimum intervention requirements but also respects those who are emotionally bound to the building in a sense.

In the design of the Sangde Villa, we faced a two-story building on topography with a beautiful view, which was about 7 meters above the street level. The client requested an expansion of the existing building while minimizing any obstruction to the stunning view. This expansion formed the design concept to include an elevator, covered parking, and a janitor’s suite. The expansion began at street level; in this new situation, we encountered a four-story building that looked out of place in the area. To address the project’s disproportionality, the building was placed on a solid stone base in harmony with its surroundings.
Located in Vila Mariana, São Paulo, the townhouse had already undergone some recent transformations. In addition to the joining of two semi-detached houses to fulfill a home-studio program for a young artist, the previous renovation included structural reinforcements and improvements to the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room.
