Just a few kilometers from the city of Albacete, in one of the villages built in the 1960s by the Spanish National Institute of Colonization, this distinctive work serves as an annex to the current nursery school in Aguas Nuevas. An essential building which forms are primarily driven by the few spaces it hosts. Therefore, only two volumes are involved in the composition: the first, narrower and elongated, connects to the existing building and houses the entrance and service areas, while the second, the main volume, rises above the rest with the sole purpose of providing children with a new type of space. An original, unexpected, and undiscovered place for them to engage in their activities.

Hangzhou Zhongtai Middle School / LZGC Quantum City Design Firm + Zhejiang Jianyuan Architectural Design and Urban Planning Institute

“The purpose of education is to awaken, not to shape”, and the campus and the natural environment should not exist in isolation, so we try to break away from the traditional perception of campus space and try to integrate the valley, sunshine and the new campus, so that young people can unleash their curiosity and exploratory nature and spend their middle school years in an ecologically pleasant campus. Hangzhou Zhongtai Middle School was founded in 2001, and with the continuous influx of urban population, the student population of Zhongtai Middle School has been expanding. In order to create an ecological and free campus environment, the school decided to relocate to a new campus in Yuhang Zhongtai Street. After sorting out the surrounding natural and urban environment elements, we came up with the “study mall” architectural design concept, which abandons the traditional inward-looking campus environment that focuses on coursework and tends to face the city, nature and education with an inclusive attitude, creating a “multi-dynamic line, courtyard-style, and shared campus”.

Suji Dream School is an alternative school that seeks happiness and free being for all 70 primary and secondary students. The school parents chipped in and managed to arrange a site at the foot of Gwang-gyo Mountain. The site was a natural green area, and therefore, the total floor area was limited to 500 square meters. This project took a lot of effort and time to gather the opinions of all the concerns. There were also other limits for the construction cost, which was insufficient.

Collège d’Orlinde Bretenoux / Dietrich | Untertrifaller + phBa architectes

A school made of wood, shadow, and light and a positive-energy building with a low carbon footprint to promote the circular economy. In most of our school buildings, wood is omnipresent to create a light, warm atmosphere conducive to learning and a sense of togetherness. This is the case also for our D’Orlinde Middle School in Bretenoux. Situated on the junction of two communes, shaping a public square, it shall help to revitalize this area, currently changing. The single-storey building is reminiscent of the regional medieval bastides and thanks to the chosen materials, it is naturally embedded in its rural surroundings. Nonetheless, it offers a touch of urban flair at the entrance to the village.
