A Tale of Buckwheat, “Memil Danpyeon” – Buckwheat is one of the grains that receive scant mention in Korean literature, which predominantly centers on aristocrats. This is because its unsophisticated character was often associated with a rustic flavor. However, due to its robust vitality, the buckwheat stood out as a cherished staple, enabling commoners to endure harsh winter and hardship in the past.

303 Shirahama Italian / Roito Inc.

May 21, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

“303” is an Italian restaurant in Shirahama town, with a picturesque view of Engetsu Island, a symbolic attraction in Wakayama prefecture, Japan. Originally, it was refurbished from a guest house once operated by the client’s family. Shirahama boasts the most stunning beach in the Kansai region, where visitors can immerse themselves in a landscape seamlessly blending with the sea. The town lies gracefully along the coastline, reflecting a deep connection between its residents and the ocean. This local affinity with the sea inspired my design approach.

Talaga Sampireun Bali Restaurant / K-Thengono Design Studio

May 16, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

Reimagining the Talaga Sampireun Experience in Bali – Talaga Sampireun, a well-known Indonesian restaurant chain synonymous with lakeside dining experience (talaga) and community gatherings (sampireun), lives up to its name across locations. However, their newest Bali outpost by K-Thengono Design Studio takes this concept further. In a departure from the standard Talaga Sampireun formula of individual saung (Sundanese for huts) spread around a lake and a separate main dining hall, the design team aimed for a more integrated experience. Here, the design forms a narrative, tracing the story of a rural Indonesian village nestled beside a body of water.

Of brewing and building, from yesterday into tomorrow – the history of the so-called Gösserhalle in Favoriten, Vienna’s 10th district, is a checkered one. Ever since its construction the industrial building, originally built as a workshop premises by the ÖBB before 1900, then converted into a beer warehouse for the famous Gösser company in the middle of the last century and most recently repurposed as an event venue, has, with its distinctive façade with clinker-clad wide arches defined the character of its urban quarter. This identity-forming brickwork structure was now taken into the future.

This is a project to revitalize an old private house in Kita-Senju, Adachi-ku, Tokyo. The current owner’s desire to preserve the townscape led to the renovation of an old private house, the “Former Itagaki Residence,” built in 1938, into a new cluster of three types of restaurants. The project began in the summer of 2019 before the confusion caused by the new coronavirus began. It was triggered by a rumor that the former Itagaki Residence might be transformed into an apartment building.

Fornole Pizza / Florencia Rissotti Arq

Inside what was formerly a mechanical workshop, a large open kitchen was set up for making pizzas and breads. A ribbon wall delimits the space, acting as a curtain, lowering the scale of the large concrete box and at the same time, hiding service spaces: kitchen, refrigerated chamber, flour warehouse, bathrooms. All kitchen devices organize the space as islands, as silver and stainless elements. In this way, the entire manufacturing process is visible and can be explored and felt as a single space.
