Brick House Záhorské Sady / ARCHITEKTI mikulaj & mikulajova

March 22, 2023 Pilar Caballero 0

At the beginning there was a large plot on the outskirts of Bratislava, overlooking the forest. And also a large, growing family, with a desire to live in a brick house. However, the orientation of the plot was difficult, with new family houses quickly growing up in the neighbourhood. So the idea of three massive houses, interconnected by light, transparent spaces, arose. Thus, the sun and daylight will reach all the rooms, and the family will have a sense of privacy, even if the house stands in a built-up area.

“Forests could be at the heart of our society again” says Joe Giddings

March 21, 2023 Nat Barker 0

We should be aiming for the future depicted in the Timber Revolution logo with a combination of mid- and high-rise mass-timber buildings interspersed with trees, argues ACAN co-founder Joe Giddings in this interview. “My vision is in some ways aligned to that illustration,” Giddings said of the artwork produced for the series by Yo Hosoyamada (top).

“Timber alone cannot get us out of this mess”

March 20, 2023 Philip Oldfield 0

Concrete as well as timber will be required to address the twin challenges of averting climate disaster and building the infrastructure the world needs, writes Philip Oldfield as part of our Timber Revolution series. There is a paradox in our desire for a low-carbon built environment. On the one hand, we know buildings are responsible

Little Granite House / BRD Studio

The core driving idea for this project was for our clients to live connected to their site and its surrounding context. As such the home does not take precedence over the surrounding context instead forming a homologous relationship to existing agricultural infrastructure. This was achieved through the formal composition of a simple gable shape with the extraction of elements to create apertures for outdoor life. Material selection wrestled a framework of local availability, bushfire protection, shade, maintenance, and patina.

Black Pond Lane / Sketch Architects

Sketch Architects were approached to design a new replacement dwelling on a steeply sloping site in Farnham, Surrey. We initially investigated retaining, in part, the original building but structural examination determined that the existing building fabric was not fit for purpose. The client stated in early discussions that sustainable design was a high priority. They also wanted a building that related to its verdant setting and is finished in natural materials, with glazed openings responding to the elevated views over the Surrey countryside.

Swantantra Residence / Spaces Architects@ka

The residence is an intricate play of design and function that found its inception in the client’s passion to create a home for three generations of his family. The client’s mandate was simple and humble; a concrete residence where all spaces remain interconnected like one’s family but also embodies the client’s appreciation of art and design. The project is conceptualized as an inward-looking house where the plan opens at the inner core with a triple-height courtyard and is an extensive exploration of concrete and art.

“We need to start using our wood more efficiently”

March 7, 2023 Maximilian Pramreiter 0

A Timber Revolution requires us to focus on reducing mass-timber structures’ raw-material use instead of trying to design the tallest possible wooden building, writes Maximilian Pramreiter. The renaissance of wood as a building material continues and has major potential to support climate-friendly construction – but it must be used efficiently. From the second half of
